FAA Proposes Airworthiness Directive for Boeing 787-8 Cargo Door Frames After Material Non-Conformance Report

The FAA has issued a proposed rule requiring inspection of large forward cargo door split frames on certain Boeing 787-8 airplanes after a supplier could not confirm that the correct titanium alloy was used in manufacturing.

The Proposed Action

The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) to adopt a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Boeing Company Model 787-8 airplanes, targeting large forward cargo door (LFCD) split frames that may have been manufactured with material that did not conform to type design. The proposed AD would require an inspection of the LFCD split frames for affected batch numbers and applicable on-condition actions, including, where necessary, replacing each affected LFCD split frame with a new one made of Ti-6Al-4V alloy material. The proposed rule affects 14 CFR Part 39.

Background and Unsafe Condition

According to the document, Boeing informed the FAA that it received a notice of escapement (NOE) from a supplier indicating that LFCD split frames on certain airplanes may have been manufactured with material that did not conform to type design. The sub-tier supplier of the material for these frames did not have the records necessary to show that the type design–specified Ti-6Al-4V alloy material was used to manufacture the frames.

The FAA explains that use of a material other than that specified by type design could result in the inability of a principal structural element (PSE) to sustain limit load and failure of the passenger floor beam to frame attachment. The FAA determined that this unsafe condition is likely to exist or develop on other products of the same type design.

The FAA reviewed Boeing Alert Requirements Bulletin B787-81205-SB530106-00 RB, Issue 001, dated February 4, 2026, which specifies the procedures for inspecting the LFCD split frames for affected batch numbers and applicable on-condition actions. The proposed AD would require accomplishing the actions specified in that bulletin, except for any differences identified as exceptions in the regulatory text of the proposed AD.
