The San Mateo County General Plan's General Land Use chapter sets goals and objectives directing how the County designates land uses. The 2023-2031 (Cycle 6) Housing Element of the San Mateo County General Plan assesses the County's current and future housing needs and presents a housing plan with goals, policies, and programs to meet those needs over the next 8 years and beyond, for the unincorporated County. It responds to severe housing pressures, rising costs, and shortages, and aims to promote production of housing sufficient to meet needs, preserve and improve existing affordable housing, encourage development near employment, services and infrastructure, and balance resource protection and community character while providing suitable housing for all residents.
